The CLDC (Connected, Limited Device Configuration) is a Java Community Process effort (JSR-30) that has standardized a portable, minimum-footprint Java™ building block for small, resource-constrained devices. The CLDC configuration of J2ME provides for a virtual machine and set of core libraries appropriate for use within an industry-defined profile such as the Wireless profile as specified by the Mobile Information Device (MID) specification (JSR-37). The CLDC standardization effort was the result of a collaboration amongst 18 companies representing several different industries. Target devices for CLDC are characterized generally as follows: 160 to 512 kilobytes of total memory, including both RAM and flash or ROM, available for the Java platform. Limited power, often battery powered operation. Connectivity to some kind of network, often with a wireless, intermittent connection and with limited (often 9600 bps or less) bandwidth. User interfaces with varying degrees of sophistication or even none.
