We are pleased to announce that the Lightweight Extensible Agent Platform LEAP reached its first milestone (LEAP Version 1.0) by running FIPA compliant Agents on PDA. LEAP has been tested and is running now on both: a PALM IIIc and a PSION 5MX through a wireless connection to the Internet.

To our knowledge LEAP is the first FIPA Platform and Agents running on lightweight PDAs under J2ME.
LEAP is the precursor of the second generation of FIPA-compliant platforms. It represents a major technical challenge - it aims to become the first integrated agent development environment capable of generating agent applications in the ZEUS (see http://www.labs.bt.com/projects/agents/zeus/) environment and executing them on a run-time environment derived from JADE (see http://sharon.cselt.it/projects/jade) implemented over a large family of devices (computers, PDA and mobile `phones…) and communication mechanisms (TCP/IP, WAP...). In this way LEAP benefits from the advanced design-time features of Zeus and the lightweight and extensible properties of new JADE. LEAP Version 2.0 will be released under an Open Source licence agreement and distributed as part of the JADE package.

LEAP is a project supported by the European Commission. (Project Number IST-1999-10211, http://www.cordis.lu/ist/projects/99-10211.htm), addressing the need for open infrastructures and services which support dynamic, mobile enterprises. It develops innovative agent-based services meeting the requirements of a mobile enterprise workforce. The field trials will cover two domains: the telecom customer service engineers in maintaining telecom networks, and assistance services for emergency road-side incidents.

In addition LEAP paves the way for future m-commerce applications, where agents on PDA's and phones will provide Intelligent, Personal and Proactive Services to mobile users as well as to mobile teams.

The LEAP consortium partners are: Motorola (co-ordinator), ADAC, Broadcom, BT , CSELT , U. Parma and Siemens. For additional information and contact details, please consult the LEAP website. http://leap.crm-paris.com/, or ask to be added to the leap-info mailing list.

FIPA, the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents is the world wide leading standard for Agent Technology. More information on http://www.fipa.org.

Apologies for any duplicate emails received,

sincerely the LEAP Team.
