Metrowerks said Monday that it will develop software development tools for the Symbian Net device platform.

Metrowerks is the developer of the widely-used CodeWarrior tools for the Palm Platform. It said in a statement that its tools for the Symbian platform will be aimed specifically at Symbian-based wireless information devices.

Symbian claims it has 35,000 registered independent software vendors. It has licensed its platform, used in Net-connected wireless phones, to Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Psion, Sanyo, Sony and Kenwood. The first five of those vendors co-own Symbian.

The companies said that the initial CodeWarrior products for Symbian platform will consist of Java development tools with future releases including C/C++ support. The initial tools will be available in June, 2001, the company said.
