from the dept. As workers continue to spend more and more time in the field, a huge enterprise challenge is becoming how to provide these workers with decent access to corporate information and email when they are on low-bandwidth connections, whether on a handheld or laptop. Equinox Solutions, Inc. has put forth its solution with the ActiveNet family of products that seamlessly extends the corporate environment to the mobile worker. ActiveNet is designed to enable mobile professionals to efficiently access enterprise data, such as LAN files and email attachments from their laptop, WAP phone, two-way smart pager (such as a Blackberry), or other handheld device. ActiveNet employs the ActiveNet Mail Companion to provide header filtering and attachment stripping and conversion for improved performance over low-bandwidth dialup or wireless networks. Users can view and manipulate remote "network neighborhood" files and stripped attachments with the ActiveNet FileBrowser and RemoteController. ActiveNet also provides the capability to attach remote documents to outgoing faxes, email messages, or send them to remote printers--all without downloading them to the handheld device. We gave the service a try. You can go to the ActiveNet Web site and download demo software to try it out, but it boils down to making it easier to download email attachments. For instance, the demo sends you an MS Word doc as an attachment that's about 69 KB. Instead of having to download the entire attachment, a dialog box pops up letting you decide to download either "full" or "partial." When using the partial-view feature, a summary, selected number of bytes, or selected number of pages can be viewed. The file conversion feature allows you to convert an attachment, such as an Excel file into text, removing charts and graphics. The demo also shows you how accessing your network neighborhood with ActiveNet FileBrowser is a simple process. One nice thing about ActiveNet is it works seamlessly with existing unmodified applications enabling them to adapt to the dynamics of low-bandwidth and wireless networks. Equinox recently got a win with its agreement to provide Sprint PCS customers with its ActiveNet service. The ActiveNet product suite is available for license by application service providers (ASPs), network service providers, infrastructure providers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and systems integrators and consultants.
