  Mobile heat smartens you up?

Forget about brain tumours, dizzy spells and headaches. The real side effect of all that brainless talk on your mobile is that it may make you smarter.

A Hong Kong study submitted 72 students, half of which were mobile users, to a series of simple tests. Tatia Lee Mei-chun, a researcher and psychologist at the University of Hong Kong, showed that regular users of mobile telephones performed “significantly” better on tests than their peers without mobiles.

Electro-magnetic magic
The theory is that the local heating effect around the ear when a mobile is used causes some change in brain tissue, bringing about an increase in processing speed. The electro-magnetic rays emitted by phones somehow made the brain work faster.

Naturally smarter
However, Dr Lee admits that the test subjects with mobiles might just be naturally smarter. She stressed the findings were only preliminary and said she hoped they would not be used to stigmatise people without mobiles. “To draw a conclusion and say ´I should get a mobile phone for my son or daughter’ would be social disaster”, she said in the South China Post.

Give me some heat!
If heat is a good thing, the grain-sized refrigerator invented by Xiaofeng Fan of the University of California, may just turn out to be as welcome as an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. According to the NatureScience update, the microcoolers, less than a twentieth of a millimetre across, can be built onto chips to stop them from overheating. Seems like such a good idea, but if your toasty warm little Nokia actually makes you smarter who wants one?
