Do you want to take the Internet with you when you go to the bathroom? Then you're going to love the wireless pad. A wireless pad is just a screen connected to the Internet via Bluetooth or a wireless LAN. It is easy and fast to turn it on, and you can take it with you to the breakfast table, the living room or your morning meditation on the toilet. In short, the perfect home wireless Internet device.

Speedy Taiwan
Everybody thought that Ericsson would be the first to come out with a wireless pad with its Freepad. But, true to form, the Freepad launch has been delayed until next year. But Taiwanese company Mitax has stepped into the breach with its WebPad Davinci. It is ready to launch, and Mitax says the Davinci will be affordable.

Light version
Anyway, WAP.com got to try out both prototypes at CeBIT. The Ericsson Freepad certainly had a better design, and the Freepad was also bundled together with a phone. However, this made the device, called the Cordless Screen Phone HS210, too heavy to be a wireless pleasure. The Davinci was much lighter. And it has one extra advantage over the HS210. It’s ready.

Launching in May
“We are launching our wireless pads in Europe in May”, said Albert Liao, project specialist at Mitac to WAP.com at CeBIT. “The price will be USD 550 for the small screen model, and USD 600 for the large screen”.

Stable screen
The Davinci is delivered with a full colour screen with a four-wire touch screen interface. It uses a Linux operating system and it has 64 MB SDRAM. It runs with a PCMCIA Ethernet wireless card, and it supports a wireless keyboard via Bluetooth. You have a docking station and a headset to the pad. Most important, Liao promises WAP.com that it has no “crashing” problems at all.

Wireless keyboard
It also functions as a PDA But no ordinary PDA. Davinci supports Java and HTML and you can download and listen to MP3 music. You’ll also be able to write fast and easily with the wireless keyboard. Unlike the Ericsson Cordless Screen Phone, the Davinci is a pad that even your little nephew will be able to handle.
