According to reports Sears, Roebuck and Co. plans to deploy 15,000 wireless handheld devices from Symbol Technologies Inc. in all 860 of its full-line department stores. This is believed to be the the largest single deal to date for Palm-powered personal digital assistants.

Sears will use Symbol's SPT 1740 wireless handheld mobile computers to perform critical in-store, browser-based applications such as inventory, price change, merchandise pickup, receiving and replenishment. The technology will also be tied into Sears networked printers to provide mobile printing solutions.

Symbol's device was chosen because it is the only PalmOS device that supports 802.11b wireless LAN modem cards. Michael LeRoy, director of store operations at Sears, says, "the lightweight portability of the Symbol 1740 makes it an excellent device to support wireless computing in our full-line stores."
