A small, portable appliance - a laptop in this case - poses two challenges to researchers and developers, if it is to obtain its power from hydrogen and a fuel cell: design of a fuel cell system, which provides the required output voltage from an extremely small volume space-saving integration of the hydrogen storage unit into the appliance In the Department for Energy Technology at Fraunhofer ISE, we developed an innovative fuel cell system, a banded-structure membrane fuel cell, to the prototype stage. A compact metal hydride stores the hydrogen ready for use.
